Beginning in January 2022, plastic packaging for fruits and vegetables will be largely banned in France. Exceptions will be made initially for delicate or prepared fruits, but these will be phased out over four years. These steps are expected to stop one billion packaging items from entering the environment each year, many of which would otherwise remain, without breaking down, for decades. Cardboard alternatives, by comparison, decompose in approximately three months.
