Since the adoption of a new Sustainable Mobility Plan in 2012, the city of Ljubljana has since seen an increase in the use of public transportation, as well as an increase in the use of cycling and walking. The plan sets to limit the use of motor vehicles and targets to increase walking and cycling, the use of public transport, and to reduce private vehicle journeys. Ljubljana’s pedestrianization and car-free zone underscore the possibility of a sustainable city through the use of new technology, improving public spaces, and upgrading the bus network. The European capital has since been car-free for over a decade.
